Fantastic Books is pleased to announce that Geoffrey Hewer-Candee has won our first art contest: to illustrate the cover Daniel M. Kimmel's forthcoming first novel, Shh! It's a Secret: a novel about Aliens, Hollywood, and the Bartender's Guide.
Hewer-Candee is an artist working just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. He received a BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University in 2009. Beyond his graphic design work, his main focus is writing and illustrating children's books, in conjunction with watching squirrels through his living room window and avoiding things he ought to be doing. His books include Dreaming of You (a children's book about separation and moving on), 50/200 (an artist's book about psychotherapy), and Collection (a collection of original short stories and drawings). His cartoons, and especially his sheep, are very engaging. Samples of his work (which seem to be completely unrelated to his cover illustration) can be seen at his web site: http://www.hewercandee.com.
Fantastic Books will be launching the novel with a party at Arisia, a major science fiction convention in Boston, this January. Coincidentally, it will be precisely two years from the launch of Kimmel's last book, the Hugo-nominated Jar Jar Binks Must Die…
Shh! It's a Secret has already been garnering rave reviews. Publishers Weekly calls it a "freewheeling, laugh-out-loud satire of the movie industry." Nebula Award-winner Robert J. Sawyer calls it "the book we've been waiting for from Dan Kimmel—funny, knowing, fast paced, full of humor, and told with a big heart. An absolute joy." And Campbell Award-winner Michael A. Burstein says the novel "is a funny and delightful tour de force that will appeal to movie fans as well as science-fiction readers."
As Shh! It's a Secret begins, the Brogardi appeared out of nowhere, and—telegraphing their peaceful intentions—landed in the middle of nowhere: New York State's Catskills Mountains resorts. It was an alien invasion, of the most peaceful, friendly kind. But there had to be something sinister behind it all, right?
Movie executive Jake Berman lives fiction for a living, promoting movies to the masses. He's happy, and only moderately harried. But his peaceful existence is thrown into overdrive when one of the aliens sets his sights beyond the decaying resorts of the east—when he decides it's time to invade Hollywood!
